How to keep up the momentum in your job hunt

When your job search drags on and you’re not even getting interviews never mind offers, it’s easy to get discouraged. But don’t call it quits just yet – you need to stay motivated and focused if you’re to land the right job. First things first, if you’re currently unemployed you need to treat your job search like an actual job.

Get up, get dressed and create a schedule and a to-do list – stay focused and tick off items as you complete them. It’s easy to stay in your pyjamas, have a second breakfast and switch on the TV for a break – but don’t do it, you’ll just feel worse – you need to be proactive when it comes to your job hunt. And if you’re already employed, you should still focus on that to-do list.

Polish up your online presence

Stand up and stand out. Get on LinkedIn if you’re not already there – it’s a fantastic place to showcase your skills and experience, and make new connections. Keep it up-to-date and connect with people and companies that you’ll like to work for. Clean up your other social media profiles too. Employers and recruiters will most likely vet your social media presence and you don’t want to put them off you.

Get out there

Finding the right job is as much about being connected in the real world as it is online. So, sign up for classes and workshops, brush up on your skills and volunteer your time – all of these things will widen your potential workplace network and your CV, and you never know who might just be looking for someone like you.

Sharing is caring

Get a support group going – if you see something you think someone else is perfect for, tell them! And vice versa, they’ll do the same for you. Surrounding yourself with positive people can be a great first step in opening doors and widening your professional network.

Realistic goals

Ok so your end goal is your dream job, but to keep the momentum, set yourself smaller targets along the way – applying for a certain number of jobs, getting an interview or meeting up with two professional contacts a month. These critical goals on the way to your larger goal, will keep you motivated and on track.

Keep the momentum up, stay motivated and you’ll be well on your way to your new, dream career. If we’ve inspired you, be sure to check out our current vacancies, you never know what might be right around the corner.
